Florida Kicks Off Session With Pro-Gun Bills On Tap

The Florida Legislature kicked off its 2025 session on Tuesday with plenty of pro-gun measures on the docket, some rolling again restrictions that had been handed again in 2018 after the mass homicide at a highschool in Parkland, Florida.

Following that taking pictures, the state legislature handed a legislation elevating the minimal age to buy a firearm from a licensed vendor from 18 to 21 years of age. Since then, the Nationwide Rifle Affiliation and different pro-rights teams have regularly fought the legislation in courtroom to get it overturned.

Now, a sequence of payments— Senate Invoice 94, Senate Invoice 920, Senate Invoice 1716, and Home Invoice 759—would just do that, restoring the flexibility for younger adults to amass firearms by decreasing the minimal age requirement to buy from 21 to 18.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis helps the measure. He addressed the age limitation throughout his State of the State handle on March 4.

“I can let you know that we, regardless of us saying we’re the Free State, regardless of us being like, ‘Oh, we’re this Republican conservative bastion,’ we’ve undoubtedly lagged on that problem,” Gov. DeSantis stated. “The free state of Florida has not precisely led the way in which on defending Second Modification rights. We must be a robust Second Modification state.”

In fact, there are many detractors within the Florida legislature poised to attempt to halt the laws’s momentum. They embrace Home Democratic Chief Fentrice Driskell, who stated restoring the gun buy age could be harmful, although the overwhelming majority of states don’t have any such legislation.

“[The changes] could be terrible for our legislation enforcement,” she instructed wusf.org. “We completely need to preserve them protected as they do their job. I used to be very troubled by his feedback.”

By the way, Gov. DeSantis has additionally voiced his help for repealing the state’s red-flag legislation and permitting open carry. Earlier this yr, he proposed what he known as “Second Modification Summer season,” which might get rid of the gross sales tax on the acquisition of weapons, ammunition, and equipment from Memorial Day to the 4th of July.

One other pro-gun-rights measure into consideration, Senate Invoice 952/Home Invoice 6025, would handle the problematic legal guidelines Florida has on the books relating to possession of firearms throughout and after emergencies. In a nutshell, the payments would repeal computerized prohibitions that violate Floridians’ Second Modification rights throughout a public dysfunction state of native emergency.

State legislation presently prohibits the intentional possession of a firearm in public, the sale of any ammunition or firearms and the intentional show of ammunition or firearms in a retailer throughout an emergency. The laws addresses all three harmful restrictions and would strike them from the books.
