The Home of Representatives handed a invoice Thursday that will empower the Treasury Division to revoke the tax-exempt standing of any nonprofit it deems has supplied materials assist to a terrorist group. A broad coalition of civil society teams have opposed the invoice, warning that it will give the Trump administration sweeping powers to crack down on political opponents. H.R. 9495, the Cease Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, handed the Home 219 to 184 largely alongside celebration strains, with 15 Democrats supporting the Republican majority. “This invoice is actually a civil rights catastrophe,” says Darryl Li, an anthropologist, lawyer and authorized scholar educating on the College of Chicago. Li, who not too long ago wrote a briefing paper on the anti-Palestinian origins of U.S. terrorism legislation, says “anti-Palestinian racism is without doubt one of the nice bipartisan unifiers in Congress.”
