Nebraska Lawmakers Considering Ammo Tax

Nebraska Lawmakers Considering Ammo Tax

We not too long ago reported about federal laws that will ban states from inserting punitive excise taxes on the sale of firearms and ammunition.

California Republican U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, one of many sponsors of the Freedom From Unfair Gun Taxes Act, mentioned that for years excessive state insurance policies and governors have focused the elemental Second Modification rights of Individuals.

“California’s new imposition of a ‘sin tax’ on firearms and ammunition equates a core constitutional freedom with playing or drug use,” Issa mentioned. “Sufficient is sufficient. That’s why Sen. (Jim) Risch and I are becoming a member of forces to introduce this key laws and cease any state tax that seeks to boost the worth of self-defense out of attain for any American.”

Satirically, only a week after the introduction of that federal measure one other state is trying to boost funding on the backs of gun house owners. In the course of the present particular session of the Nebraska Legislature a measure was launched that will place a 5% excise tax on all ammunition gross sales within the Cornhusker State.

The measure is Legislative Invoice 65, authored by Democrat Justin Wayne. And in accordance with the measure’s language, the income will go to the state Division of Income, the Division of Well being and Human Companies and the Sport and Parks Fee.

“The division shall remit the proceeds of the excise tax imposed by this part to the State Treasurer for credit score as follows: (a) Fifty % to the Property Tax Credit score Money Fund; (b) Thirty-five % to the Wildlife Administration Grant Program Fund; and (c) Fifteen % to the Submit-Traumatic Stress Dysfunction Grant Program Fund.”

The language of the invoice didn’t clarify why lawful gun house owners training their Second Modification rights had been singled out to fund these efforts. Presumably, it’s alongside the traces of a sin tax like these positioned on alcohol and tobacco, however this time the “sin” is training a constitutionally protected proper.

As NRA’s Institute for Legislative Motion put it: “LB 65 is a property tax money seize, saddled on the backs of gun house owners. Proponents of LB 65 focus their assist on the assets this laws affords for wildlife conservation efforts and packages to offer assist to these affected by PTSD. That’s solely half the story and half of the fund’s allocations. The opposite remaining 50% is allotted for a property tax money fund.”

That is simply the form of tax that the federal laws mentioned earlier is attempting to carry to an finish. However the greed of anti-gun politicians trying to fill funds shortfalls apparently has no limits.

As Sen. Risch mentioned after introduction of the federal laws to finish these techniques: “Democrats’ newest assault on the Second Modification seems like an extreme excise tax to fund gun management initiatives. The Freedom from Unfair Gun Taxes Actensures states don’t place a big monetary burden on law-abiding gun house owners to advance their anti-Second Modification agenda.”

Nebraska LB 65 was heard final week within the Senate Income committee. A vote on the invoice might be held at any time.
