New Mexico Senate Passes Sweeping Semi-Auto Gun Ban
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The New Mexico State Senate has accredited a sweeping ban on frequent semi-automatic firearms legally owned and utilized by hundreds of lawful residents for sport, competitors and self-defense.

The measure, Senate Invoice 17, would ban frequent gas-operated semi-automatic firearms, .50-caliber rifles nearly by no means utilized in crimes and firearm magazines holding greater than ten rounds below the guise of labeling all of them “extraordinarily harmful weapons.” The measure handed by a 21-17 margin, with all Republican senators and three Democrats voting towards the invoice.

Startlingly, the definition of a “semi-automatic firearm” within the laws takes in way over simply the AR-style rifles generally centered on in such ban proposals.

The measure states: “‘Semiautomatic firearm’ means a firearm that’s not a machine gun and that, upon initiating the firing sequence, fires the primary chambered cartridge and makes use of a portion of the power of the firing cartridge to extract the expended cartridge case, chamber the subsequent spherical and put together the firing mechanism to fireplace once more and requires a separate pull, launch, push or initiation of the set off to fireplace every cartridge. ‘Semiautomatic firearm’ features a semiautomatic rifle, semiautomatic shotgun or semiautomatic handgun.”

The measure additional explains that among the many banned weapons are any “gas-operated semiautomatic firearm that may settle for a removable journal,” which encompasses almost each semi-automatic handgun in the marketplace.

Republican Senators, who had been preventing to defeat the invoice however failed in doing so, defined that these passing the measure know it’s unconstitutional however selected to vote for it anyway.

“As we speak, Democrats in Santa Fe determined that the rights of New Mexicans to guard themselves and their households must be eradicated,” Senate Minority Chief William Sharer stated after the vote. “Take heed to the phrases they are saying, they’ve repeatedly admitted this invoice is unconstitutional, but they’re forcing it upon law-abiding residents.

“New Mexicans need to be represented by elected officers who take their oaths of workplace significantly, not by activists who hate our Structure and who promote fringe radical insurance policies designed to undermine the very basis of our Nation.”

Sadly for gun homeowners, the invoice goes even additional than banning weapons and magazines in frequent use by New Mexicans. It additionally targets the firearms trade by imposing extreme and expensive bureaucratic mandates on native firearm sellers, together with invasive “site-hardening” safety necessities and unrealistic 24-hour response deadlines for regulation enforcement hint requests.

Nonetheless not content material with the injury their measure may trigger, anti-gun Senate Democrats additionally included language within the measure that will compromise the privateness of lawful residents by centralized record-keeping of purchaser identities and firearm serial numbers, whereas on the identical time threatening sellers with felony costs for minor or technical compliance errors.

The measure now strikes to the Home of Representatives, the place Democrats additionally maintain a strong majority. If handed by the Home, the one option to cease it might be for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to veto the invoice—an extended shot contemplating she has spoken out in favor of such a ban many instances prior to now.

In reality, following passage of the measure, Lujan Grisham acknowledged in a information launch from her workplace: “I’m a agency believer in accountable gun possession – that’s not up for debate. However the truth of the matter is that our communities, our households and our regulation enforcement are put in danger each single day when weapons of battle fall into the mistaken arms.”
