From his non permanent workplace within the basement of the Klickitat County Courthouse, Sheriff Bob Songer is finishing up a provocative mission: he’s refusing to implement a brand new Washington State gun management legislation.
The legislation, Initiative 1639, raises the age to buy a semi-automatic rifle to 21, expands background checks, and provides new guidelines for the protected storage of firearms. A few of its provisions went into impact on January 1st; the remaining are supposed to begin in July.
However Songer says the legislation is unconstitutional — and he insists he gained’t carry it out, nor, as an elected sheriff, ought to he be obligated to.
“Even when it was a authorized legislation, you’ve gotten discretionary energy,” Songer tells VICE Information Tonight. “There isn’t any different legislation enforcement official in your complete United States besides a sheriff is elected to workplace by the folks.”
